A truly bizarre incident in 2013 led Javier Mascherano to be sent off in the match against Argentina in a 1-1 draw in the World Cup qualifier against Ecuador. With the game going in the final minutes, La Albiceleste tried to attack in search of more goals, Mascherano fell to the field after a collision.

The Argentine needed treatment, so the medical staff put Mascherano on the car and took him to the yard. Mascherano got angry when a bottle hit him while leaving, and he immediately stepped on the shoulder of the staff driving the stretcher.
Referee Enrique Caceres sent Mascherano off the pitch. Teammate Ezequiel Lavezzi had to intervene to prevent Mascherano from confronting the host team official.
Mascherano later admitted his mistake when kicking the doctor. He thought he was just trying to warn the stretcher driver to go so fast that he was about to fall off.
