Indian movies have a big fan base and it has found a way to generate niche content thanks to various online streaming platforms. Here are some of the Indian movies for you to catch right now.

Tumbbad (Hindi film)

This movie released in the year 2018, is about a man’s quest for a lost treasure hidden inside his familial mansion in a small town of Tumbbad in the Maharashtra state of India. Set during the British rule, the movie begins with Vinayak Rao as a child learns about the folklore around his deceased father’s mansion which hides a demon who has plenty of gold as his disposal. Vinayak manages to get hold of it slowly, steadily. This forms the crux of the entire movie and you see how Vinayak eventually comes very rich but keeps going back to the mansion to bring back more & more gold. Cinematography, production design, and the entire tone of Tumbbad stand out because it is something never seen before. The horror genre entwined with fantasy makes the story of the film very unique. A must watch. Tumbbad is available on Amazon Prime for you to catch.

Trance (Malayalam Film)

A movie from the state of Kerala, released this year in February, Trance is a story of a motivational speaker Viju with problematic family members but he encourages himself to get to his work daily. After a tragedy strikes his family, he moves to Mumbai and is hired by a duo of ultra-rich businessmen, who make him a Christian pastor and they would fund all of his travel and other luxuries. Viju now rechristened as Joshua Carlton reaches a pinnacle of his success being a pastor. The heady cocktail of success and the god complex that forms inside Joshua’s mind makes the rest of the film. The first half of the film is almost perfect and it falters a bit in the second half but the climax makes it up for all mishaps here and there. Trance is an enjoyable experience because of the performances of the actors, sound design, original soundtrack, and cinematography. Technically, the film is a marvel. Catch this movie on Amazon Prime.

Ayyapanum Koshiyum (Ayyapan & Koshy, Malayalam Film)

Released around the same time as Trance, Ayyapanum & Koshiyum is a tale of two ego headed men who clash. Ayyapan being a police officer of a small sleepy town in Kerala has a conflict with military retiree rich brat Koshy. The back and forth of pulling each other down through power and influence form the plot of the film. Over three-hour-long feud saga of these two men drags in between but the performances of the lead and other supporting actors hold the film. It is a good watch because the film holds on to the story and doesn’t become a mass entertainer movie. Catch this movie on Amazon Prime.

Vikruthi (Mischief, Malayalam film)

This 2019 released film is based on true incidents that happened a couple of years ago to a person traveling via Kochi Metro. A Facebook savvy Sameer ends up taking a photograph and making a meme out a man looking washed out and is sleeping inside the Kochi Metro. The photograph becomes viral and the man in the photograph becomes a joke. The man is Eldho, a mute person who has a family, neighbors, and co-workers who love him unconditionally. Eldho gets severely traumatized by this incident and post this stressful time forms the entire movie. Technically the movie is not that polished but the story and performances of the leads hold the entire film till the end. The film has a morality angle which is very true to current times. A good watch indeed. You can stream this movie on Netflix.

All the above movies are available on the streaming platforms with subtitles.
