Al Khor: The Park with its own Zoo.

Located in the West of Al Khor Municipality lies one of the country’s oldest public park, the Al Khor Park. Spread over an area of 240, 000 square meters, the foundation of the Park was laid way back in 1983. The Park was closed for a period six years in 2010 for the purpose of renovations and was thrown open for public after the completion of the renovation process earlier this year in February. The Park was inaugurated by the Minister of Municipality and Environment Mohamed bin Abdullah al-Rumaihi after the QR250 million renovation job was done.

The family oriented park houses large children’s play areas, football playing area spread over 1350 square meters. The park has its own amphitheatre, basketball court, skating course, a miniature golf course and even a battery operated trains that can carry 36 people at once. Pets are not allowed into the park. Biking and barbequing is strictly prohibited as well.

In addition to the entertainment and leisure facilities, the park is also equipped with dining and other convenience facilities as well. The park has a dedicated car park that can house more than 600 cars. As many as 26 washrooms are located throughout the park. Additionally, the park has its own set of cafés and a restaurant as well.

The Park remains open for families from 8 in the morning until 10 at night, except Thursdays, when the entry is restricted strictly to women and children. Entry to the park costs QR5 per person who are above 9 years.

The most important feature of the park in view of the closure of the Doha Zoo is that the Park has its own mini-zoo. As soon as the Park was opened over 150 animals from the Doha Zoo were shifted to the Al Khor Park. The Doha Zoo is currently undergoing a transformation process that will ultimately convert it into a Safari Park. Al Khor Park now is a home to over 20 species of animals which include Zebras, Emus, Peacocks, Oryxes and other exotic and rare birds. The Park has a dedicated veterinary room to look after the health and well-being of the animals housed in the Park. The Vet section has its own lab and quarantine rooms as well.
