Birds in Qatar

Qatar is a desert country, around 315 species of birds are found here, out of which 257 species are migratory and visits only during winters. There is a wide variety of birds found here like Ostrich, tropic birds, pelicans, Greater flamingos, pigeons, Imperial eagle, Marsh Harrier among several others.
Qatar also witnesses a wide array of migrating birds during the winter season typically starting from November every year. Most bird species migrate from Europe and Middle East as winters are the most attractive season for them. Few migrating birds use Qatar as a stop over while transiting to Africa in search of food and comfort.
While laughing bulbul, Shikra, tufted ducks and hoopoe can be seen commonly in Qatar, the most famous birds remain the falcon. Facon is also the national bird of Qatar, it is strong and a large sized bird regarded as the symbol of courage and force, which is known for being the status symbol of rich Arab families.
Falcons are also utilized in various sports like falconry which is one of the favourite game played in Qatar. Falcons have thin, broad and large wings that let them to fly high and at very high altitude. While falcons are very strong and prays on reptiles and other birds, they are very shy and not commonly seen.
Falcons are regarded as precious birds, they are also used as pets by Arabs and remains in high demand in Arabian countries. A few interesting facts about falcons are
1. Falcons kills their prey with their sharp beak and claws.
2. They have extraordinary vision, almost 2.6 times greater than human vision.
3. Male falcons are smaller in size as compared to female falcons
4. They are one of the fastest birds, they can accelerate up to 120 km/hr when hunting.
5. Average life is around 10 to 13 years for Falcons
6. Falcons are also known as hunting dogs of skies.
7. Royal members of Qatar visit Pakistan to hunt houbaras with Falcons every year.
