Places to visit:

Leh Palace

Leh Palace is considered to be one of the best and finest examples of medieval Tibetan architecture. The building is made from wood and mud. The palace was built by the king SenggeNamgyal 450 years ago. It has nine storeys and it was used by the royal family until the middle of the nineteenth century. The palace is located just above the old city of Leh and is easily accessed on foot from the city centre.

Shanti Stupa

The Shanti Stupa is a beautiful white-domed chorten which was built by Japanese Buddhists, along with some locals in 1991. This is known to be the symbol of peace celebrating 2500 years of Buddhism. In summer, tourists come here every evening to enjoy the sunset and the wonderful view of the town of Leh. The Shanti Stupa can be accessed on foot from the city centre but it’s quite a long walk, it takes approximately 45 minutes and it includes a steep climb. Another option is to take a taxi and you will be therein less than 10 minutes.

Turtuk village

Located just along the Shayokriver in the Nubra valley, the village of Turtuk is only 12 kilometres from the border with Pakistan. It’s only recently that tourists are allowed to travel to this village. However they must obtained an Inner Line Permit from the Leh permit office before heading toTurtuk. The village is inhabited by a Muslim community who speaks Balti language (as the village used to be part of the Baltistan Region). Don’t forget to try the traditional Balti cuisine such as the apricot based stew while you are there. Visiting Turtuk is an experience that you will not forget. The village is surrounded by green fields, apricot trees and tall mountains. It is so beautiful and peaceful that you will not want to leave this place.

There are many other places to visit in Ladakh such as the breath-taking lakes of Pangong Tso and Tsomiri and the impressive Buddhist monasteries of the Indus valley. However, driving on the small mountain roads of Ladakh takes time so if you have got only one week or 10 days to visit, you will not be able to cover all these places. Anyway, if you visit Ladakh once, it’s sure that you will want to come back!
