Trekking in the Himalayas: how about Ladakh?

  • 4 years   ago

Every trekker dreams of the Himalayas. Indeed, the highest mountain range in the world is a paradise for mountain lovers. Does “trekking in the Himalayas” means “trekking in Nepal”? Absolutely not!

Even though Nepal is the most popular destination for trekking in the Himalayas, there are many other options. The Himalayan range stretches through several other countries such as Tibet, Bhutan, India, Pakistan and even Myanmar.

In northern India, Ladakh has many treks to offer. This ancient Buddhist kingdom with a strong cultural identity close to the Tibetan culture attracts thousands of trekkers every year. While the famous treks in Nepal (Everest Base Camp trek, Annapurna Circuit, Langtang valley trek) tend to be overcrowded, the treks in Ladakh are much more quiet and authentic, you will not be disturbed by other tourists.

There are many different types of treks in Ladakh, some are good for beginners and some other require a good level of fitness. Here are 3 treks which are among the best treks in the region.

Sham valley trek

The Sham valley trek is the easiest trek in Ladakh, people call it the “baby trek”. It is perfect for people who do not have trekking experience and people who prefer to do a short and easy trek. It is done in 3 or 4 days and it is doable at any time of the year, even in winter. This trek is the opportunity to discover many authentic villages where you can meet the local people and try the local Ladakhi dishes. The trek does not go to high altitude so there is no risk of Acute Mountain Sickness during this trip. During this trek, you can visit some of the most astonishing monasteries of Ladakh such as Likir monastery and Ridzong monastery.

Markha valley trek

The Markha valley trek is one of the most beautiful trek in Ladakh. Many tourists come to Ladakh to do this trek. The trail passes through the Hemis National Park which is home to many animals. If you are lucky, you might be able to spot a snow leopard. The trek starts from Chilling village, a short drive from Leh, the capital city of Ladakh. It takes approximately a week to complete this trek, depending on your pace. It is possible to do this trek from the month of April or May until the end of October. During this trek, you can enjoy the Ladakhi hospitality by staying in teahouses or homestays.

Rupshu valley trek

The Rupshu valley trek is a difficult trek on the plateau of Changtang. Landscapes are amazing along this itinerary which starts from the village of Rumtse on the Leh-Manali road and ends at the lake of Tso Moriri. This trek requires a very good physical condition as it goes to high altitude (up to 5,500 metres above sea level) and there are long days of walk. During this trek, you can meet the Changpa nomads. This trek can be done between June and October. It takes 7 to 10 days to complete and it is an experience that you will never forget.
