Newborn baby becomes 'world's youngest coronavirus victim'

A 6-week-old baby died after becoming infected with the coronavirus.

Democratic Connecticut Gov. Ned Lamont announced the news in a series of tweets posted on Wednesday. He noted that the newborn's death was the first death of a child that the state has experienced since the pandemic arrived in the United States.

"It is with heartbreaking sadness today that we can confirm the first pediatric fatality in Connecticut linked to #COVID19. A 6-week-old newborn from the Hartford area was brought unresponsive to a hospital late last week and could not be revived," Lamont wrote.

Childhood deaths related to the coronavirus have been rare. The vast majority of fatal coronavirus cases have been in adults over the age of 65. Lamont noted that the 6-week-old's death is one of the youngest reported fatalities connected to the coronavirus.

"Testing confirmed last night that the newborn was COVID-19 positive. This is absolutely heartbreaking. We believe this is one of the youngest lives lost anywhere due to complications relating to COVID-19," Lamont said.

He continued, "This is a virus that attacks our most fragile without mercy. This also stresses the importance of staying home and limiting exposure to other people. Your life and the lives of others could literally depend on it. Our prayers are with the family at this difficult time."

Connecticut has been one of the hardest-hit states in the U.S. as the outbreak in New York bleeds into neighboring states. As of Wednesday, there were more than 3,100 confirmed cases of the coronavirus in Connecticut and 69 related deaths.
