He started showing the symptoms on March 5 and was tested positive for Covid-19 on March 10. He had a fever and his breathing was laboured. But he fought through and defeated the novel virus in time to celebrate his birthday.

As the facility is still in lockdown, people cannot go inside. So, one of the caregivers from the facility brought Bill outside in a wheelchair with a face mask on. His family was also there and they celebrated his birthday with banners, ballons and cake while maintaining social distancing protocols.

Lapschies, who has two grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren is a warrior. In his lifetime, he has survived the 1918 Spanish flu, the great depression, a couple of recessions. That is not all, he also fought in World War II. He was stationed in the Aleutian Islands.

In his facility, 15 other veterans have been tested positive for the novel coronavirus and two fatalities have also been reported.
