Ban on use of word ‘maid’ for domestic worker in ads

The Ministry of Commerce has issued an order prohibiting some terms or words that prejudice the dignity of foreign workers while publishing any advertisements about the recruitment of foreign labor.”

The advertisement should not include the term “servant or maid servant” but instead to be replaced by the phrase “worker or female worker.” The term “transfer of services” shall be used in place of words such as “to sell, to buy, and dispose of.

The ministry stressed that the advertisement should not include publication of personal photo, identity card, residency permit (iqama) or any other personal data of expatriate workers, domestic workers, and those in similar categories.

 

Similarly, the advertisement should also not include any provision that obligates the worker to bear with any financial costs in exchange for the transfer of service under any circumstances.

The ministry also instructed that the advertisement should avoid any reference with regard to the receipt any sums of money for the transfer of services. It is also mandatory to obtain the consent of the worker before transferring the service.
