GCC chief welcomes Saudi-Qatar borders' reopening

Secretary-General of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Dr. Nayef Al-Hajraf has welcomed the reopening of air and land borders between Saudi Arabia and Qatar.

Al-Hajraf hailed the announcement, stressing that it came on the eve of the 41st GCC summit that begins in Saudi Arabia's historic city of AlUla on Tuesday (Jan. 5).

In a press statement on Monday posted on the official Twitter handle of the GGC, Al-Hajraf said: “Earlier today the Kuwait Foreign Affairs Minister Ahmad Nasser Al-Mohammad Al-Sabah announced that the air, sea, and land borders between the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the State of Qatar will re-open as of this evening."

He said that the announcement came after a call by Emir of Kuwait Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah to his brothers Emir of Qatar Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani and Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Muhammed Bin Salman

“This decision on the eve of the 41st GCC summit is a reflection of sincere efforts being made to ensure the success of tomorrow’s summit across all areas despite the exceptional circumstances created by the pandemic. Today’s announcement once again proves that the GCC embodies a deep-rooted partnership that consistently overcomes challenges while advancing the interests of the GCC people thanks to the leadership and wisdom of its leaders,” the GCC chief added.
