Mother suspected of locking up son for nearly 3 decades
Police in Sweden suspect that an elderly woman kept her son locked inside a filthy apartment for nearly three decades after a relative reportedly found the victim with no teeth and multiple injuries.

The 70-year-old suspect has been charged with unlawful deprivation of liberty and grievous bodily harm while the man, who’s 41, is being treated at a hospital for “the physical injuries he had when he was found,” prosecutors said Tuesday.

Officials released few details about their investigation, but the woman who found the victim and alerted the police described a heartbreaking scene inside the home in Haninge, a suburb of Stockholm.

The unidentified relative told Swedish newspaper Expressen that she went to the apartment Sunday after learning that the suspect had been admitted to a hospital. She said she found the main door unlocked and decided to go inside, where she found “urine, dirt and dust” all over the place.

“It smelled rotten,” she told the paper, adding that the place likely hasn’t been cleaned for years.

The woman reportedly heard a noise from the kitchen and found the victim sitting on blankets and pillows — the first time she had seen him in about 20 years. The relative said the suspect removed her son from school when he was around 11 and 12, and she believes he had been locked up for 28 years.

The man was found this week with multiple sores on his legs and puddles of water under him, but the woman said he immediately recognized her despite all those years.

“He spoke very fast and a little incoherent, but he was not afraid of me,” she told Expressen.

The suspect has denied any wrongdoing, authorities said. Her name has not been released.
