Over the past week, fish markets in Al Wakra have seen more customers after a gradual fall during the beginning of the holy month of Ramadan. According to a local Arabic daily, Arrayah, there were increase in demand for higher retail prices.
Many sellers and traders stated that the initial fall in demand was because of the fact that fish is not used much by customers during the holy month. The sellers said that the fish markets are open to the public every day except on Thursdays and Fridays. There are 22 retail shops and three cleaning stalls. Dr Abu Aqlah al-Massari, from the health control section of Al Wakra Municipality's Municipal Control Department, ensure that every fish at the market is examined numerous times in the day tp make sure they are perfectly fit for human consumption.
A surge in summer heat could cause speedy deterioration of the fish that is kept in the market. He explained that the low sales of fish could lead shops to store the unsold quantities for the next day. Accordingly, the section exercises tighter control on the market to make sure that the fish are stored appropriately. Moreover, the sellers are prohibited from keeping the fishes in display that has not been sold after two days and they are asked to dispose them.
Dr al-Massari, has advised all the fishermen that soon after netting the fish, they must have many various quantities of ice in their boats and store the fishes in adequate ices. Dr. Al-Massari has also said that all customers must also do the same way by keeping them in the fridge soon after buying them in order to avoid damaging them due to the hot weather conditions.
