International Women's Day: Five Prominent Women from Qatar

March 8th, International Women's Day, the focal point in the movement for women's rights, marks the call to action for accelerating gender parity. It is one of the most important days of the year to: celebrate women's achievements, raise awareness about women's equality and fundraise for female-focused charities.

In a video made by Qatar Day in celebration of International Women’s day, we highlight and acknowledge 5 of the most prominent and important Qatari women. Amna Mahmoud Al-Jaidah, Sheikha Al-Mayassa Bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, Lolwah Rashid Mohammed Al-Khater, Dr. Hanan Mohamed Al Kuwari, and Sheikha Moza bint Nasser. 

The State of Qatar believes in the high status of Qatari women and their aptitudes to assume the highest positions and to carry out duties assigned to them in a manner marked by vigour, effectiveness and responsibility.

 

Amna Mahmoud Al-Jaidah is considered to be the first female teacher in Qatar, then went on to become the first Qatari female principle. 

 

Lolwah Rashid Mohammed AL-Khater is the Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the State of Qatar since 2017, and the Spokesperson for the Supreme Committee for Crisis Management in Qatar, which is responsible for the management of the COVID-19 pandemic and the Assistant to the Minister of Foreign Affairs in December 2019. She is a Media City board member and executive director of the Doha Forum. 

Dr. Hana Mohamed Al Kuwari is the Minister of Public Health. She is the Chairperson of the Academic Health System International Advisory Board, the Chairperson of the Hamad Healthcare Quality Institute International Advisory Board and the Governor on the Board of Governors for Sidra Medicine

Sheikha Al-Mayassa Bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani is the Chairperson of Qatar Museums and the Doha Film Institute. She holds a degree in Arts and Political Science from Duke University. She was declared the most influential person in art on ArtReview's Power 100 and appeared on the Time 100, and Forbes' The World's 100 Most Powerful Women.

Sheikha Moza bint Nasser is the Cofounder and Chairperson of Qatar Foundation for Education, Science, and Community Development. She is involved in the United Nations, as an advocate for Sustainable Development Goals and plays an active role in supporting Global Education. She has also launched international projects such as Education Above All, which is a global initiative that aims to bring opportunities to marginalized and less fortunate women, children and youth. She has been named as one of Forbes’ 100 Most Powerful Women at #74
