MME: A significant jump in percentage of self-sufficiency in plant, animal, fish sectors
- 3 years ago
H.E. Eng. Abdullah bin Abdul-Aziz Bin Turki Al-Subai'i, Minister of Municipality and Environment, confirmed that the State of Qatar, represented by the Ministry of Municipality and Environment (MME), attaches great importance to food, food security and natural resource development to increase production and raise the level of self-sufficiency.
Speaking on the occasion of World Food Day (October 16th), he said that the MME has adopted plans and strategies based on increasing the production of agricultural goods in the country such as vegetables, red meat, poultry, eggs and fish. Hence, the agricultural sector has made a big leap in addressing the requirements of the local market and raising self-sufficiency in the plant, animal and fish sectors to provide a healthy and balanced food.
He pointed out that the participation of the State of Qatar with the world's countries and many organizations and institutions in the celebration of World Food Day, which marks the day of the establishment of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), comes this year (2020) in exceptional circumstances in which the world is suffering from the global Covid-19 pandemic. He further noted that the theme of this year's celebration (Together, we grow, feed, and maintain sustenance), aims to raise public awareness of the importance of food for healthy human growth and for future generations while maintaining sustainability. Reports indicate that nearly 690 million people are suffering from hunger, in addition to 2 billion people who are suffering from the so-called hidden hunger, which is vitamin and mineral deficiencies. This renders it necessary to help the world's poor to have access to balanced food.
The Minister said that Qatar's celebration of World Food Day is an affirmation of the importance of providing food to everyone living on its soil. This falls in line with the state's interest under its wise leadership in developing natural resources, especially agricultural, towards achieving self-sufficiency in many of these goods and products.
He further noted that the FAO is trying to emphasize the human right to healthy food and growth, and urged governments to provide food for their people and invest seriously in agriculture and food through sound practices to maintain sustainability.
