Brigadier General Salem Saqr al-Muraikhi has stated that most of the work has already been completed and only a few simple things remain which will eventually also be completed soon.

According to reports in the local Arabic newspaper Al Arrayah the Committee in charge of the Shura Council elections are preparing in full swing for the upcoming polls in October.

The report quoted Brigadier General Salem Saqr al-Muraikhi, director of the Legal Affairs Department at Ministry of Interior (MoI) as stating, “There are separate teams working for the successful conduct of the election,”

According to Al-Muraikhi the sub committees were formed after the Amiri decision was issued to form the Supreme Committee and these sub committees are holding regular meetings to draft laws, regulations and decisions in order to complete the electoral process. Furthermore, most of the work has already been completed and only a few simple things remain which will eventually be completed soon, the Brigadier General added.

The Constitution of Qatar calls for the establishment of a Shura Council that comprises of 45 members out of which 30 are elected and 15 appointed.

Brigadier General Al-Muraikhi further explained that every electoral district will be represented by one member each and the Constitution has issued a general directive stating that the electoral districts should include all the regions of the State of Qatar.

The committee’s policy allows for any party, whether it be media or civil society organisations to monitor the electoral process, provided if first a request is submitted in this regard to the concerned authorities.

The process for this is similar to the one followed in the last Central Municipal Council elections, the senior MoI official added.
