Qatar Affirms Importance of Holding International Conference to Explore Ways to Regulate Cybersecurity in International Law

The State of Qatar has affirmed the importance of convening an international conference to discuss ways to regulate cybersecurity in international law, a call launched by HH the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani on the podium of the United Nations General Assembly at its seventy-fourth session.

In a speech before the 30th session of the UN Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice, HE the Permanent Representative of the State of Qatar to the United Nations and international organizations in Vienna Ambassador Sultan bin Salmeen Al Mansouri said the State of Qatar is one of the countries most interested in strengthening cybersecurity at the national and international levels. This year, it established the Qatar National Cybersecurity Agency and voted in favor of a UN resolution to draw up a comprehensive international convention against cybercrime.

 

In his speech, His Excellency addressed the Global Program for the Implementation of the Doha Declaration, and said that the projects of this program succeeded during the five years of implementation in developing mechanisms and approaches to the work of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, developed new tools in the fields of training and capacity development, and enhanced the readiness and effectiveness of Member States to address transnational organized crime, drugs, corruption and terrorism. The program also established and expanded the partnerships and working relationships of the United Nations Office with many partners within and outside the United Nations system, and contributed to strengthening the concept of sustainability.

With regard to the integration of sport in crime prevention and criminal justice strategies related to youth, HE the Ambassador affirmed that the Global Program for the Implementation of the Doha Declaration provided a unique model in this regard, and that the State of Qatar is interested in hosting major sporting events, including the 2022 World Cup for its belief in the power of sport in bringing people together and building a culture of peace.
