Qatar participates in the fifth session of the UN Environmental Assembly

Qatar participated in the virtual regional meeting of West Asian countries under the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) from 1 to 2 February 2021.

Due to the global pandemic, the first part of UNEA 5 (UNEA 5.1) will take place virtually from 22-23 February 2021. A second part (UNEA 5.2) is expected to take place as an in-person event in February 2022.  

In preparation of the Fifth Session of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-5) scheduled on the 22nd and 23rd of February, the meeting aims to introduce the Medium-Term Strategy 2022-2025 and the UNEP action program 2020 -2023 and identify the priorities and the needs of environmental action in the region and plan its activities.UNEA-5's main theme of UNEA-5 is “Strengthening Actions for Nature to Achieve the Sustainable Development Goals”. The theme calls for strengthened action to protect and restore nature and the nature-based solutions to achieve the SDGs in its three complementary dimensions (social, economic and environmental).

 

Agenda items include:

International environmental policy and governance issues

Programme of work and budget and other administrative and budgetary issues 

Contributions to the meetings of the high-level political forum on sustainable development and implementation of the environmental dimension of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable 

Development  

Commemoration of the creation of UNEP by the UN Conference on the Human Environment 

Mr. Abdul Hadi Al-Marri - Director of the Climate Change Department, and Eng. Abdullah Jumah Al-Muraikhi - Qatar's contact point at the United Nations Environment Program's West Asia Office, represented Qatar in the meeting.
