The Environment and Sustainability section in the Facilities and General Services Department at Qatar University (QU) marked Earth Hour recently to raise the awareness about preventing environment and climate change.
The department conducted an event to mark Earth Hour with the aim of encouraging community members and institutions to turn off all unnecessary lights and electronic devices for an hour from 8.30pm to 9.30pm by launching the initiative to reduce the electricity consumption.
The event, which is organised every year on the last Saturday of March, Earth Hour brings together millions of people from over 180 countries and territories, switching off their lights to show their support for the planet.
Madawi al-Shafi, head of the Environment and Sustainability section, stated: “We had the chance to participate in the Earth Hour event two years ago at Qatar University, and last year during the pandemic people were able to conserve energy and save the environment in one way or another.”
Madawi further said that, “We wanted to participate this year in the Earth Hour event, but due to the current Covid-19 situation in the country, we decided to do it through social media platforms only. Thus, we distributed glow bracelets among the Qatar University community to get them involved in the event. We were pleased by the number of students posting very creative photographs and videos of their participation.”
"We turned off the lights of some of the campus buildings, even the Higher Administration Building, to emphasise the importance of conserving energy and preserving environmental resources," Madawi added.
The media team covered the entire activity through Qatar University’s social media platforms, including Snapchat and Instagram.
