The Qatari Forum for Authors held today via video conference technology a symposium as part of the celebration of the World Day for Cultural Diversity, which is marked on May 21 each year.
The Forum's celebration of the World Day for Cultural Diversity is within the activities of Doha, Capital of Culture in the Islamic World 2021, and the Forum's celebration on this occasion includes a number of activities.
The opening of the symposium featured speeches by HE Minister of Culture and Sports Salah bin Ghanem Al Ali, Secretary General of the Qatar National Commission for Education, Culture and Science Dr. Hamda Hassan Al Sulaiti, and HE Director General of the Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ICESCO) Dr. Salem bin Mohammed Al Malik.
In his speech on the occasion, HE Minister of Culture and Sports pointed out that the event of the Doha, Capital of Culture in the Islamic World confirms that culture is a light that illuminates the path of human civilization, and it is a safety valve for society as it is closely linked to identity, adding that any society that seeks to enhance its identity requires to take care of its culture. Its distinction from other societies will be a source of richness for civilization because civilization advances by difference rather than symmetry, and cultural diversity is based on the perception of human dignity, he said.
His Excellency added that human dignity is based on freedom and justice which are two basic components that are indispensable for members of the same society and for all human societies. From this point of view, free people in any part of our world do not accept attacks on human dignity and do not accept injustice, and what is happening in Palestine is a blatant attack on the Palestinians and all the free people in the world. What is being targeted today is not only Jerusalem, Al-Aqsa and Gaza, but rather that human covenant upon which humanity has agreed and proclaimed by United Nations charters, he said.

For her part, Dr. Hamda Hassan Al Sulaiti said that the State of Qatar has been keen for a long time to pay attention to cultural diversity and the dialogue of cultures and civilizations, believing in the effective role of cultural diversity, cultural and intellectual dialogue, respect for other cultures in the rapprochement between peoples, and the promotion of the values of tolerance, peace and security in the world, and the impact of this on building societies that are able to achieve the goals of sustainable development.
Out of our responsibility as an active member in the intergovernmental committees for agreements to protect and promote diversity in cultural expressions in UNESCO, she added, the State of Qatar has hosted many conferences, seminars and forums on dialogue between cultures, civilizations and religions, including the cultural diversity festivals which are held annually in Katara, with the participation of many countries of the world. Doha also hosts the Doha Center for Interfaith Dialogue and the Qatari Committee for the Alliance of Civilizations, which aim to promote dialogue and openness, consolidate the values of tolerance, solidarity and peace among peoples, and reject violence, intolerance and extremism.
For his part, HE Dr. Salem bin Mohammed Al Malik expressed his happiness to participate in this celebration, describing theme of the celebration as valid, consistent with the goals pursued by the events of Doha, Capital of Culture in the Islamic World 2021, as part of the ICESCO program to celebrate the capitals of culture in the Islamic world, and within the framework of the ICESCO declaration on cultural diversity.
