Shafallah Center takes part in UN conference on rights of persons with special needs

The Shafallah Center for Persons with Disabilities participated yesterday in the 14th session of UN virtual Conference of States Parties to the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, held in New York under the theme of right to education.
The conference discussed the right to practice modified sports activities for persons with disabilities, believing in the importance of this aspect, the goals that can be achieved through sports activities and the precautionary arrangements and measures that were followed during the COVID-19 pandemic.
In this regard, Director of Treatment Services Department at the Shafallah Center Dr. Mohammed Talfat presented their working paper, which included a presentation and introductory presentation on the sports activities unit in Shafallah and the services and programs provided, whether internal or external.
Dr. Talfat also reviewed the modified and adapted types of sports and activities according to the type of disability practiced by the Shafallah’s affiliates. He also reviewed the mechanism of work in the sports activities unit at Shafallah and the plans and programs for its affiliates, which included sports events and tournaments organized by the unit, such as the annual ice skating festival and the annual bowling championship.
On the other hand, Dr. Talfat confirmed, through the submitted working paper, that Shafallah has taken many precautionary measures during the COVID-19 pandemic in order to ensure the continued provision of sports activities to all those affiliated with the center.
The services provided consisted of: filming a group of modified sports videos using simple tools that can be provided in every home, and creating an online library containing all the videos through the sports activities unit channel on Microsoft Teams in order to help parents view the channel and implement sports exercises for members at home, a number of direct virtual training sessions were implemented with the affiliates in coordination with the parents, and a virtual tournament was organized for the affiliates in football and bowling.
Dr. Talfat discussed, through the working paper of the Shafallah Center, the ways and aspects of cooperation and the close relationship between Shafallah, the Qatar Paralympic Committee and the Qatar Special Olympics, and highlighted the product of joint cooperation through the center’s participation in many global and regional games and championships for the Special Olympics for both winter and summer. He reviewed the achievements of Shafallah’s employees in these posts since Shafallah’s first participation in Ireland in 2003.
He also confirmed that preparations are underway for the Shafallah’s participation in the Special Olympics Winter Games, to be held in Russia in February 2022.
