The Media Committee of Sheikh Hamad Award for Translation and International Understanding (SHATIU) organised an educational symposium on the reality and prospects of translating between the Arabic and the Urdu languages in the Republic of India, within the events of the Award’s seventh session.
In the symposium, which was held virtually, an elite of intellectuals, academics and translators have participated. They presented valuable research on the suggested axes, as the symposium was managed by Translator and Radio Host at Qatar Urdu Radio Obaid Tahir.
Dr. Habibullah Khan talked about India’s experience in translating between the two languages, saying that the number of books that have been translated from Arabic to Urdu has exceeded 18,000 books.
A number of professors, translators and academics talked about their experiences in translating between the two languages and discussed the challenges they have faced in translating certain words and expressions, particularly the obstacles that occur in translating poetry from and to Arabic.
It is noteworthy that the seventh session of Sheikh Hamad Award for Translation and International Understanding includes translation awards in individual books and is divided into four branches: Translation from Arabic to English, translation from English to Arabic, translation from Arabic to one of the other chosen languages, and translation from the other chosen languages to Arabic.
Each prize is worth $200,000, as the first place winner will receive $100,000, while the second-place winner will receive $60,000 and the third-place winner will receive $40,000.
The second category includes the Achievement prizes in the minor languages, as it is awarded to several translated works from the selected languages to Arabic, and from Arabic to the selected languages (Urdu, Amharic, Dutch, and Modern Greek), with $100,000 allocated for each category.
The third category also includes the Achievement prize for the two main languages, and this award is worth $200,000.
