HE President of Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC) Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al-Thani crowned Al Shamal team as the champion of the third Arab Super Cup for handball, after defeating Al Gharafa 23/22, in the Qatari confrontation that brought the two teams together today at Duhail Sports Hall.
HE Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al-Thani handed the Arab Super Cup to Al Shamal team captain Abdullah Hafez, while President of the International Handball Federation Dr. Hassan Mustafa, handed the gold medals to the teams players and the silver medals to Al Gharafa.
During the two halves of the match, memorial shields were exchanged between HE President of Qatar Olympic Committee Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al-Thani, and President of the Arab Handball Federation Mohammed Al Manea, in the presence President of Qatar Handball Federation Ahmed Al Shaabi.
Al Shamal deserved to win despite the equal start of the match, which lasted until the middle of the first half, but then Al-Shamal began to gain an advantage, which ended the first half in its favour, with a difference of three goals by 11/8.
In the second half, Al Shamal continued to excel to advance by six goals, and despite the strong return of Al Gharafa, who reduced the difference to one goal, Al Shamal managed to maintain its lead and settled the victory in its favour.
Al Shamal is the second Qatari team to win the Arab Super Cup for handball. Al Arabi won the title of the first edition that was held in Tunisia in 2018, while Tunisian Esperance won the title of the second edition that was held in Jordan in 2019.
Al Shamal played the Arab Super match as the winner of the fifteenth Arab Championship for the Handball Cup Champions Clubs, which was held in the city of Bani Khiar in the Tunisian state of Nabeul last year, while Al Gharafa was crowned with the title of the Arab Championship for Handball Champions Clubs in its last edition. The thirty-fifth session, which was held in the Jordanian capital, Amman, in 2019.
President of Qatar Handball Federation Ahmed Al Shaabi congratulated the Board of Directors of Al Shamal Club for winning the Arab Super Cup and said in press statements that Al Shamal has made a great achievement added to the series of accomplishments of the Qatari clubs, which always reflects an honorable image of the Qatari handball. He noted that the match saw a good technical level from both teams, which reflects the development witnessed by the game.
He hoped that this Arab achievement will be a motive for more achievements for the Qatari handball in the upcoming participations at all external levels. (QNA)
