Teacher Ahmed Al Maani from QSTSS Comes Second in International FameLab Competition
Design technology teacher Ahmed Al Maani from Qatar Science and Technology Secondary School (QSTSS) for Boys has come runner-up, shared with a UK competitor, in the international FameLab competition, which was held virtually on Thursday, November 26th.

Al Maani, who competed with 20 scientists from all over the world, managed to earn the the best scientific communication title after qualifying for the final rounds along with 10 contestants. The 1st place award was secured by Switzerland.

FameLab is one of the biggest science communication competitions in the world. It was initiated by Cheltenham Science Festivals in the UK across 31 countries, and brought to Qatar by the British Council in partnership with the Ministry of Education and Higher Education and Qatar National Research Fund (QNRF).

Commenting on his win, Mr. Al Maany, said: "FameLab was a wonderful experience I have ever had in my life. It broadened my scientific experience and taught me several skills, including communications skills, methods of scientific research and content presentation. Most importantly, it taught me a lesson that persistence and hardworking are what help us achieve our goals. Such achievements would not have been possible without teamwork. This demonstrates how important cooperation and cohesion are."

Al Maany expressed deep gratitude to those who supported him, including family members and friends. He said: "I dedicate this achievement to the State of Qatar and the Ministry of Education and Higher Education, which has consistently supported and developed educational opportunities and scientific research through various educational institutions, including the British Council, QNRF and QSTSS."

FameLab aims at helping young scientists to express themselves and communicate their work to the public audiences in an open, inspiring and interactive way. It further urges young generations to adopt science and scientific communication as an inspiring career path in the future, and to recognize science as part of the dominant society's culture. Qatar has been taking part in the competition since 2016.
