In 2018, Qatar National Research Fund (QNRS), member of Qatar Foundation, granted funding and scientific license to the Applied Scientific Research Team consisting of Dr. Eng. Mohammad bin Saif Al-Kuwari, representative of the Ministry of Municipality and Environment and Dr. Khaled Hassan, Managing Director at Infrastructure Research and Development (IRD) of Qatar Science & Technology Park, in addition to Prof. Ian Sims, international expert and consultant in geology and engineering and Dr Murray Reid, engineering consultant and expert from Britain, the United Kingdom.

The funding was granted to undertake an engineering scientific research, in cooperation with Public Works Authority (Ashghal), on recycling structural waste and making best use of certain natural materials in some engineering projects.

The Scientific research focused on the use of scientific and technical theories, modern techniques and advanced methods in the area of recycling structural materials in buildings and roads as well as optimizing the utilization of natural materials upon treatment, so that they would be subsequently used in buildings, roads and construction industries.

In this context, the scientific research team thought to use valley stones, produced by the sand washing process, in certain engineering projects related to buildings, construction, and roads. These stones can be found in sediments of valleys located in Qatar's southern region, especially Al Kharj, Al Kharara and Mukaynis areas, which has about 4.5 million ton on its own. Washed sand is extracted from these areas, where stones of high degree of hardness, strength and durability are located. Studies have proofed that these stones can be significantly used in construction and road projects.
