Indian cricketer MS Dhoni announces retirement from international cricket

Indian cricketer Mahendra Singh Dhoni has announced his retirement from all forms of international cricket, effective immediately, Indian media outlets report.

The 39-year-old, who is one of his country’s most successful cricketers of recent times, had previously announced his retirement from tests in December 2014, but continued to feature in the shorter formats – Twenty20 and One Day International – of the game.

Overwhelmingly popular with the younger generation of cricket fans in India, Dhoni was known for being calm under pressure, and his powerful hitting with the bat and quick reflexes as a wicketkeeper made him a long-term presence in the Indian cricket team.

Under Dhoni’s captaincy, India lifted the 2011 Cricket World Cup on home soil – their second such triumph – beating Sri Lanka in the final. He also led the team that made it to the semi-finals of the 2015 World Cup, where they lost to Australia, and was a part of the team that went to the semis of the 2019 edition, where they were beaten by eventual runners-up New Zealand.

Dhoni is a long-serving member of the Chennai Super Kings, the Indian Premier League franchise that was formed in 2008. During its two-year ban from the competition, Dhoni played for Rising Pune Super Giants, before returning to CSK in 2018.
