Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo have stepped up football’s fight against coronavirus by each donating a huge €1million (over $1million) to help combat the pandemic.

A hospital clinic in Barcelona revealed that Messi had donated €500k to them and another medical center in Argentina.

Juventus star Ronaldo and his agent Jorge Mendes, according to the Associated Press, have contributed €1million to three intensive care units for coronavirus patients at hospitals in their native Portugal.

One of the hospitals, located in Porto, said the unit will be named after Ronaldo and Mendes at a later date.

The spread of the coronavirus has wreaked havoc not the sporting world, with almost every major event cancelled in order to stop the continued spread of the deadly disease.

In Portugal, there are now more than 2,300 confirmed cases of COVID-19, with more than 30 deaths recorded.

Whilst Spain is currently one of the most severely infected countries, with nearly 40,000 cases and an estimated 3,000 deaths.

Messi’s homeland Argentina has just over 300 confirmed cases, with six deaths recorded.

The generosity follows the lead of Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola, who donated a similar amount to aid medical workers in Barcelona where he is from.
