Acer Reportedly Hit With A Massive $50 Million Ransomware Attack
Acer, a Taiwanese multinational hardware and electronics corporation, has been hit by a REvil ransomware attack where hackers are demanding a whopping ransom worth $50,000,000, reports Bleeping Computer. This ransom demand is the largest known ransom to date in a cyberattack by REvil (Ransomware Evil), a ransomware-as-a-service (RaaS) operation that hands over malware to its affiliates and extorts money from organizations worldwide.

As per the report, the ransomware gang announced that they had breached Acer on their “data leak” website where they also shared image proofs of the stolen documents including financial spreadsheets, bank balances, and bank communications. Also, the hackers might have targeted a Microsoft Exchange server on Acer's domain to steal data.

The Taiwanese electronics and computer maker has been given March 28, 2021 as the deadline to pay the ransom. If not paid, hackers say they will leak all of the stolen data. But, if Acer makes the paytment by this past Wednesday, then hackers will offer the company a 20% discount along with a decryptor, a vulnerability report, and deletion of its stolen data.

Bleeping Computer states that Acer hasn't provided a clear response as to whether it has been a victim to the REvil ransomware attack. "Acer routinely monitors its IT systems, and most cyberattacks are well defensed. Companies like us are constantly under attack, and we have reported recent abnormal situations observed to the relevant law enforcement and data protection authorities in multiple countries,” responded the company. It also further said that the company has been "continuously enhancing (its) cybersecurity infrastructure to protect business continuity and information integrity”.

Apart from the cyberattack on Acer, it has also been recently reported that the REvil ransomware gang, has a slew of other major organizations around the world on its target list. According to a report by News18, these hackers have a dark web store called “Happy Blog” that lists vast amount of stolen data for sale. The “Happy Blog” currently lists data from Acer, African bank Union Bank of Nigeria, and major American celebrity law firm, Grubman Shire Meiselas & Sacks.
