PlayStation is partnering with Discord to bring more ways for players part of the PlayStation Network to connect with friends and fellow gamers.

The partnership is expected to bear fruit in early 2022, connecting the PlayStation Network experience on console and mobile with your Discord account. As part of the PlayStation Discord partnership, Sony has made a minority investment into Discord too.

“From our very first conversation with co-founders Jason Citron and Stan Vishnevskiy, I was inspired by their lifelong love for gaming and our teams’ shared passion to help bring friends and communities together in new ways,” said PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan announcing the partnership. “Empowering players to create communities and enjoy shared gaming experiences is at the heart of what we do, so we are beyond excited to start this journey with one of the world’s most popular communication services.”

The new of the partnership between Sony and Discord also comes less than two weeks after Microsoft's bid to buy Discord for $10 billion fell through. Several media reports claim that Discord did receive numerous bids from several other companies too but the company decided to halt all buyout talks stating that it "is performing well and prefers to stay independent at this time."

The details on PlayStation's deal with Discord are still relatively murky, which means that the deal doesn't spell out what exactly this means for gamers, the PlayStation 4 or PlayStation 5, and the Discord app itself. The obvious implication is that we might see a Discord app launch on PlayStation, but the deal could also simply mean connecting Discord and PlayStation Network for more seamless communication on consoles and mobile devices. Sony says it'll have more to share on the matter "in the coming months."
