It has recently come to light that WhatsApp is working on a new feature called “mention badge” that will appear in the group chats. With this new feature, WhatsApp will show a mention badge in the group cell for times when you are mentioned in that specific group. The feature was first reported by a popular website, WABetaInfo that posts regular updates related to WhatsApp.

“After several updates that addressed bug fixes and general improvements, WhatsApp has released today the 2.21.3.13 beta update. It has nothing new apparently, but we can show today a preview of the feature they’re working on in this build: the mention badge! WhatsApp has a feature that allows to show a mention badge in the group cell, every time you are mentioned in that specific group”, states WABetaInfo.

It further adds that, “we’ve previously reported that this feature was under development. After receiving some reports, we’ve investigated and we’ve discovered that this is an old feature, apparently for some users. For a certain part of users, this feature did never work, so WhatsApp is introducing a sort of “fix” in order to make it work for those users. The fix will be enabled in a future update”.

WhatsApp is regularly experimenting with new features and recently also released a new animated sticker pack called Taters n tots, which is available for previous versions too. WhatsApp also rolled out ‘mute videos’ support feature for Android beta users which will let users mute the audio in video before sending them off to a contact. The feature will also be rolled out publicly soon for all users.
