La Maison du Caviar has been open a few years now and every time we have had dinner, we have been impressed. When we walked into the restaurant, we were however a bit surprised at how quiet it was (it was the same last time we went also) why were we the only diners on a Sunday night in one of Doha’s trendiest hotels?

Pushing this aside, we settled down on one of the rose petal laid tables – utterly romantic! As we browsed through the new menu (created by renowned French Chef Remy) we were impressed with what was on offer. We opted for the caviar and blinis, fresh salmon, cream cheese and bread. Simply fantastic – the caviar - fresh, plump, refreshing whilst the salmon was beautifully smooth and melted in the mouth. The entrees alone were the perfect start to the evening.
One little slip up was when we spent 15 minutes choosing our main course to be told after we had chosen it that it was not available! It would have been nice to have known this before my mouth started salivating over the knuckle of lamb. Maybe it was a blessing in disguise because option B was just wonderful – beef tenderloin with banana and cinnamon mash potato – sounds intriguing we know but the flavours married perfectly with each other. It was some of the best cooked and flavoursome beef I have ever tasted.
The desert menu is equally enticing – tarts, ice-cream, truffles and a cheese board.
There is no reason why this restaurant isn’t packed out every night – maybe some people think it just serves caviar and maybe for most it’s out of their price range? Let’s just say the menu is extensive – French food and it’s finest and the prices are very reasonable for its quality (150QR on average for a main course) We have always believed that La Maison du Caviar up there with the best restaurants in Doha and even after our latest visit, we still stand by that.

They also offer an Express Lunch, a 3 course lunch for 89QR, served in 29 minutes. But unfortunately this is where the restaurant is let down. When we dined, there was no mention of the 29 minutes- instead it took 2 hours from ordering to bill payment. And the less said about the food the better- we could have been in a different restaurant from the one we had dinner in! Greasy, overcooked pasta, dry fish and disappointing starters. If they hope to incite new customers in through their express lunch then they're going to need to do a lot, lot better than this!
